India's Independence Day and Mahatma Gandhi

To my mind the life of a lamb is no less precious than that of a human being. I should be unwilling to take the life of a lamb for the sake of the human body. I hold that the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man.

-- Mahatma Gandhi

Today is India's independence day. Mahatma Gandhi played a key role in India's freedom struggle. The principles of ahimsa - nonviolence, initiated by Gandhi was the foundation for India's freedom struggle against the British.

Mahatma Gandhi led a very simple life. Gandhi ate simple vegetarian food. Gandhi not only worked for the welfare of human beings, but he also wanted all the living creatures across the world to be happy. To know more about Gandhi visit website1 and website2 .

October 2, Mahatma Gandhi's birthday, is also World Farm Animals Day . To know more about Gandhi's views on animals, visit website1 and website2

I sometimes feel that Mahatma Gandhi would have thrived on a vegan diet if he was alive, as you can find diary-free milk in India these days. I'm sure
there will be many vegans in India, if many diary alternatives such as rice milk, almond milk, soy butter, nut butters, vegan chocolates and vegan ice cream is widely available.

Nice article on Mahatma Gandhi.

I agree with you on "I sometimes feel that Mahatma Gandhi would have thrived on a vegan diet if he was alive"

However I think the concept of Vegan was not their during those days.

In India this concept is totally new and most of the people including Doctors, Dietitians and nutritionists, are ignorant about Vegan diet and lifestyle.

So happy you discussed Gandhi and his views on animals on Independence Day, Kumudha. Leading a life of non-violence is impossible unless one renounces cruelty to animals, as Gandhi understood so long ago. I hope your article inspires more people to think about the connection between cruelty to animals and the "food" they so thoughtlessly eat every day.

Hi there, Lovely article on Mr. Gandhi :-) going vegan is a very healthy choice. I myself was one for almost 3 years. Had to give 20% of that due to my new job that requires dining and wining, but trying my best each and every time :-)
I am happy to discover your blog. I came here through Jugalbandi, as I am featuring their blog in this month´s Tried And Tasted, I hope you are participating.

I didn't realize World Farm Animal Day shared the day with Ganghi's birthday. How appropriate. Happy Independence Day!
