Different Brands and Types of Tofu

I have tried different brands of tofu and now tofu is
a staple at our home. Ever since I tried trader joe's
tofu, I simply don't feel like purchasing any other
brand of tofu other than Trader Joe's.

I adore Trader joe's tofu. Tofu from Traders joe's is
slightly creamish in color and I feel it tastes pretty
different from other brands of tofu.

The best part of extra-firm tofu is that it looks and
tastes so much like paneer(Indian cottage cheese). I also
like tofu because it gets cooked within a couple of minutes.

There are many types of tofu: silken tofu, firm tofu,
and extra-firm tofu. I use extra-firm tofu frequently
to cook simple spicy gravies, to eat with
Chapatis(flat wheat bread) or hot rice.

What is your favorite brand and type of tofu?

Extra-firm tofu is definitely a staple in our house. I always have some in the freezer just in case.
We don't have Trader Joe's down here in Houston, so usually I default to buying the whole foods brand (for regular tofu) and mori nu (for silken tofu).
Isn't the soybean amazing?

The tofu they sell here in Australia is all vaccuum packed and is so super firm. It's great.

So for palak paneer do you fry the tofu before adding to the palak?

I use extre firm or firm tofu to make palak paneer. I do fry the tofu cubes before adding to the palak.

Hi Kumudha -
We have only tried tofu a couple of times and it did not come out right - perhaps we were not using the right type of tofu. We shop regularly at TraderJoes and will pick the extra-firm Tofu.

Do you have any favorite recipes with Tofu?

I will post a simple recipe of tofu in a couple of days. Actually, since tofu is very bland, tofu tastes great with lots of spices.

I've never tried trader joe's....we don't have one in Toronto. My favourite tofu is the fresh stuff I buy in china town. I can't understand the writing on the label, I jus tknow it spells good. It's actually not very firm. When I freeze it and then thaw it again it gets spongier than you would ever imagine.

Yes, tofu is so expensive in India. In Bangalore I saw tofu in only upscale markets, like nilgiris. I guess I saw Nasoya brand of tofu in Bangalore. I guess tofu is very expensive in India, because tofu is not produced locally.

Since tofu is so expensive in India, it is not very popular in India.

Never seen any "extra-firm" tofu around here, just firm or soft/silken tofu... the Asian markets also have fried and preserved tofu, and the fresh Asian tofu is slightly softer than the vacuum packed one from the supermarket, but I usually never buy the fresh tofu, because it has to be eaten within a few days, and the packed tofu stays fresh for a month. I tried to prepare tofu at home several times, but it was successful only once, and it took hours of preparation without a soy milk machine. But the taste and texture of the self made tofu were fantastic :-)

I like TJ's tofu, and get it when I'm near there, which isn't often. Usually I get the stuff from the big bulk bucket in the Asian market.

You scoop it out of the water with tongs and put it in a plastic bag.

Yes, I was a little worried the first time I did this, but it is GOOD stuff indeed!

I have a post way w-a-y back on my blog about tofu. I love the stuff! (Obviously).

just picked up the exact same "Extra firm Organic" Tofu from Trader Joes!

Will try your recipe over the weekend. Garam masala bothers my stomach, so I may substitute with regular red chilli pwder and a couple other spices.

(I think its the cloves and cinnamon in garam masala which affect me).

Nice recipe kumuda! I like if the paneer is spongy, so I soak in hot water before adding it to the gravy!

I usually get the firm Sunrise tofu, just because it's always at the grocery stores we usually go to.
I'd love to try the Trader Joe's brand, but we don't have one here! :(

Im surprised tofu is both expensive and not easily available in Bangalore n Gurgaon.
We manufacture tofu in Pune. Its on every supermarket shelf and other stores.
And its priced at Rs20/- for a quarter kg.

Is there any way I can help?

How have you been Kumudha? Today one of my visitor wanted to know where silken tofu is available in Bangalore and I googled and landed in your blog. I've given this link to her.

I use whichever brand is available. The store I go has Nasoya sometimes and Mori-Nu sometimes. Whenver I go to Trader Joe's I get theirs.

First thing is tofu is rarely seen in Indian retails.
In Bangalore, there is one company recently started making tofu in the brand name soyfit Nosreves Foods. I even tested their ready to eat masala tofu and I was quiet impressed with the taste.
As they are preparing it locally, i guess the price will be cheaper.

And as far as recipes are concerned, it can be used as an replacement of paneer.

Jumping into this dicusssion and adding my two cents.
I have never tried Trader Joes tofu. I love whole foods 365 brand. Its really cheap at arounsd 1.75 per box for organic tofu. it also tastes fresher.
Nasoya just seems ok.

In India, there used to be several brands available in Pune, but nowadays there is only one brand - Chetrans. I am not sure if its a seasonal thing. I have been buying herbal tofu for years with different flavors like Italian, thai etc. that can just be eaten as a slice by itself.

Tofu in Pune is quite reasonable. You have Chetrans tofu and there was Dakini a while ago. Tofu is also available at the Spicers bakery. Recently Dorabjee has also started making tofu. It is also reasonably priced approx Rs.35 for 400gms...

dis is d first tym i had or cooked tofu n i jus used tofu instead of paneer in kadai paneer .. it tasted yuck... so generally tofu has this sour curdish taste or is it a brand problem..?? someone pl help me wid this ..
